2018 Anime Summary – Overview

Happy new year, folks. I’m not beating around the bush here, these past few months I haven’t found much passion to write at all. I much prefer watching to writing and boy, did I watch a lot this past month. Although I can’t say that I love writing, I do want keep this blog as a logbook/ diary on what I had watched and what my opinions on shows/ films I watched at that given moment. It means that I’ll find new ways to keep you readers informed of what I watch during a month or so. On that end I’ll make a Movie/Show log every fortnight or so with a brief impression about them, and doing more seasonal reviews, bunk reviews instead of full reviews.

Towards that goal, this week will be about the comprehensive summary of 2018 in anime. In general, I consider 2018 an underwhelming year. It has many solid shows, but none breaks out as a modern classic for me. I suspect 2018 will be remembered as the year where Netflix original anime storms the mainstream. While I do have some reservations towards its models (never a fan of releasing the whole batch in one go, and I feel Netflix originals are a tad bit too retro, not in a good way), they do take risque and any platforms that brings more exposure to anime is always a welcome. 2018 is also a really strong year for comedy. Comedy that is plain silly (Grand Blue), comedy that makes you cry (Anzumatsuri), comedy that is too dry (Pop Team Epic)… this year has it all. Less idol shows this year compared to the last few years, but at the same time more hopeless isekai shows, imouto incest shows, shows adapted from mobile games and soft-core porn shows, 2018 sure leaves its mark boldly.

For the next few days, I will split the summary into 5 parts:

Part 1: My favorite 5 OPs, 5 EDs and 2 full songs of the year  Part 2: Several technical/characters/miscellaneous awards   Part 3: Genres shortlists and Awards   Part 4: Honorable Mentions and Top 10 shows of the year   Part 5: List and rank Anime Movies of 2018 (Note: at this moment I list 15 films – 5 watched, 5 more available, 5 non-available. I will post this part once I finish these 15 films in the shortlist.

Stay tune for the next day for Part 1 – my favorite tunes of the year

Weekly Anime Summary – Fall 2018 Week 10

SO I decided to finally drop Karakuri Circus, and catching up with the current Double Decker (so… 1 more episode). Karakuri Circus has its unique charm, but it has a string of mediorce episodes as of late to the point I don’t care for any of these characters any more. With the last season of the year is shaping up towards its end, I pretty much have my top 15 shows of the year ready. How they fare in final ranking will be depend on how these current shows land though. As of late I am watching many shows from early 2010s as well, and maybe at the start of next year I’ll do a film/anime log with basically list down movies/shows I have watched every 2 weeks with my general thoughts. That way I don’t have the burden to do full review (unless I want to), and you guys can still keep tab with what I’ve been watching. But that’s for the future and let’s run this week down:

Weekly Anime Summary – Fall 2018 Week 8-9

“’Cause nothin’ lasts forever
Even cold November rain”
Boy, November has ended and before you know it, Christmas is on its way. Sorry for the lack of activity in this blog, but at this time, I’m more willing to watch rather than to write about stuffs. Just this last week I came up with a list of 50-something anime of 2010s I will need to watch in oreparation for the Decade list. I don’t want to list those shows here, as I know I”m not going to devour them all and that will make an awkwark void if I stop halfway. I’ll still try to review those shows as I finish, so at least expect this weekly summary and maybe anime reviews at this stage (for movies, maybe recent ones, not project).

This last 2 weeks, this season of anime gets to its lowest point where it tries to connect between this middle arc and climax, think of this stage as our neck, so understandably they are hit or miss at best. Now, sit back and enjoy the show.

Weekly Anime Summary – Fall 2018 Week 7

It’s this time of a week again. With this week 7, I decided to cut 2 shows as they didn’t win me over in their last episodes. Irozuku basically wasted its 20-minutes, whereas Zombieland Saga and Karakuri Circus further slip into mediocrity. On the other spectrum, Golden Kamuy continues to surprise and Bloom into You becomes a serious contender of the season. Ups and downs like a wave, this batch of Fall Season’s anime never fails to be intriguing. Also, thumbs up for Franz Ferdinand’s reference in Double Decker, which I think is extremely well done. The groupings this week, appropriately, will be around Franz Ferdinand’s songs as well. Enjoy the piece!

Weekly Anime Summary – Fall 2018 Week 6

Spring breezes (here in Australia), blink an eye and this season already reached half-way. Only 6 more weeks until we get to the close of this 2018 year. For this mid-season point I’m going to do something different. I will group them in the order of their quality (purely subjective of course). Normally this is a good week for me to drop the last two shows, but since both of them will end their mini-arc next week, I’ll give them some leeway this time. In overall, only two shows make it to the elite list – shows that actually have a great shot on my Yearly Top 10, but that doesn’t mean this list gonna stay this way until the rest of its run. Now without any further ado, let’s jump in:

Weekly Anime Summary – Fall 2018 Week 5

Well, I’ve had a busy week in real life to the point I don’t even find the time to finish this writing up. In term of anime, it’s a bit of a mixed bag in overall. I still legimately enjoy almost all the shows I’m currently watching, but come next week (as the midway point), I’m gonna drop about 2 shows. Double Decker and Thunderbolt Fantasy 2 really up their game this week, while the likes of Bunny Girl Senpai, Goblin Slayers suffer from its middle parts. While at the same times Golden Kamuy and GRIDMAN are constantly being weird in a good ways and shows like Tsurune and Fuiteiru are as sturdy as ever. We have quite a solid bunch this season, one that offers multiple reccomendable genre fares and overal above average production values. Let’s get into it now

Weekly Anime Summary – Fall 2018 Week 4

The anime this week is pretty solid overall. I watched 16 shows and I had an enjoyable watching them. I might cut down 1 or 2 shows come next few weeks but I’m pretty happy with the line-up so far. Many shows kick into full gear (like the formidable Thunderbolt Fantasy 2 or Karakuri Circus), while others just content of being themselves (lookin’ at you Golden Kamuy). While again I don’t have clear favorites, the wealth of this Fall’s selection, spanning across many genres and settings, is something worth happy about. You might say I’m an optimistic dude, but at long as we have “there’s too many anime to watch” as a complain, it’s not a bad place to be at all. As for my film projects, rest assured that I’ll be back this week.

Weekly Anime Summary – Fall 2018 Week 2-3

So this new season has run in full gear now that all the titles have settled in and showed their true skins (well, most of them anyways). If you’ve read my First Impression post,  basically I continue to follow all the shows from Kishuku Gakkou No Juliet downward, so basically 16 shows in total.  3 weeks in, 1 show OUT, and Tsurune’s gonna replace its spot for now. Couple more shows I’m not too sure about but I’m willing to give them some more chance. As far as this Fall season goes, there still isn’t any show that I would put it on an elite level, but the worthwhile list sure is crowded. While Zombieland Saga stumbles in its 3rd episode, SSSS.GRIDMAN and Bunny Girl senpai continue to prove that they still have tricks under their sleeves; and even more traditional fares like Karakuri Circus or Fuiterui still provide a whole lotta fun. For RErideD and Double Decker, I know that more episodes came out but for now for my sanity sake I’ll keep an episode per week. Another thing of note is that due to my own timing, for this Fall season I’ll post this either on my Monday or Tuesday (Monday would be ideal but I have more time and less work on Tuesday). With all that said, let’s scroll down to see all the fruits of this Fall season’s offering, with some random grouping just for the heck of it.

Seasonal Anime Review: Fall 2018 First Impression (Full updated)

While there are some shows still lagging behind, we’ve pretty much had the general sip of what this new season has to offer. Although personally I don’t have a clear favorite (my top shows are the lowest since I’ve taken this job), there are many shows that genuinely surprise me. Who would’ve thought an anime with “Bunny Girl senpai” in the title can be this solid, or shows like Zombieland Saga and SSSS Gridman that defy their own tropes in every turn? On the negative side, I can regard this season as the season of bad-taste rape-attempts. From yaoi show about a romance between two sexy boys poisoned by attempted rape; goblins sexual assault to loli abuse, incest romance and a boy who travels to another world to make love with 12 different girls. This season has it all. Same deal, I’ll rank those show down, starting from worst to best. The rating I give is based on the Color code.

In general, this season, I’ve watched and reviewed the total of 32 new episodes (no sequel or shorts included, unless otherwise noted). At this moment there are 3 shows left from the list: Ingress (which is licensed by Netflix), Tsurune (which is delayed due to typhoon) and Kitsune no Koe (already out but no sub available) [update: it’s a short), Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur which will add as soon as they’re available online.

Weekly Anime Summary – Summer 2018 Week 12

With week 12, a handful of shows reach their final episodes. They mostly wrap up nicely, thankfully, even lesser shows like Shichisei ends on a high note or Hanebado and Tsukumogami are looking good in their last leg. I sure will miss Asobi Asobase and whatever hijinks it came up with: butt-lazer, foul-mouth sexbot, whatever… I love them all. After 6 consecutive climax after climax, Planet With finally ends. Still pretty much closes its threads skillfully.  Also, as a last note, this post will be the last Weekly Anime of this Summer season, as I will take a 2-week break overseas. The next post regarding anime will be in 3 weeks with the Final Impressions of the Summer anime, followed by the mega-post First Impression of the next Fall Season. Now, enjoy the last look in Summer anime offerings, starting with all those shows that finished this week.
