So this new season has run in full gear now that all the titles have settled in and showed their true skins (well, most of them anyways). If you’ve read my First Impression post, basically I continue to follow all the shows from Kishuku Gakkou No Juliet downward, so basically 16 shows in total. 3 weeks in, 1 show OUT, and Tsurune’s gonna replace its spot for now. Couple more shows I’m not too sure about but I’m willing to give them some more chance. As far as this Fall season goes, there still isn’t any show that I would put it on an elite level, but the worthwhile list sure is crowded. While Zombieland Saga stumbles in its 3rd episode, SSSS.GRIDMAN and Bunny Girl senpai continue to prove that they still have tricks under their sleeves; and even more traditional fares like Karakuri Circus or Fuiterui still provide a whole lotta fun. For RErideD and Double Decker, I know that more episodes came out but for now for my sanity sake I’ll keep an episode per week. Another thing of note is that due to my own timing, for this Fall season I’ll post this either on my Monday or Tuesday (Monday would be ideal but I have more time and less work on Tuesday). With all that said, let’s scroll down to see all the fruits of this Fall season’s offering, with some random grouping just for the heck of it.Continue reading “Weekly Anime Summary – Fall 2018 Week 2-3”
While there are some shows still lagging behind, we’ve pretty much had the general sip of what this new season has to offer. Although personally I don’t have a clear favorite (my top shows are the lowest since I’ve taken this job), there are many shows that genuinely surprise me. Who would’ve thought an anime with “Bunny Girl senpai” in the title can be this solid, or shows like Zombieland Saga and SSSS Gridman that defy their own tropes in every turn? On the negative side, I can regard this season as the season of bad-taste rape-attempts. From yaoi show about a romance between two sexy boys poisoned by attempted rape; goblins sexual assault to loli abuse, incest romance and a boy who travels to another world to make love with 12 different girls. This season has it all. Same deal, I’ll rank those show down, starting from worst to best. The rating I give is based on the Color code.
In general, this season, I’ve watched and reviewed the total of 32 new episodes (no sequel or shorts included, unless otherwise noted). At this moment there are 3 shows left from the list: Ingress (which is licensed by Netflix), Tsurune (which is delayed due to typhoon) and
Kitsune no Koe (already out but no sub available) [update: it’s a short), Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur which will add as soon as they’re available online.
With week 12, a handful of shows reach their final episodes. They mostly wrap up nicely, thankfully, even lesser shows like Shichisei ends on a high note or Hanebado and Tsukumogami are looking good in their last leg. I sure will miss Asobi Asobase and whatever hijinks it came up with: butt-lazer, foul-mouth sexbot, whatever… I love them all. After 6 consecutive climax after climax, Planet With finally ends. Still pretty much closes its threads skillfully. Also, as a last note, this post will be the last Weekly Anime of this Summer season, as I will take a 2-week break overseas. The next post regarding anime will be in 3 weeks with the Final Impressions of the Summer anime, followed by the mega-post First Impression of the next Fall Season. Now, enjoy the last look in Summer anime offerings, starting with all those shows that finished this week.
Ho boy, blink an eye and we already one week away from saying goodbye to these shows. For now, while people have every right reasons to regard this Summer season as lackluster, I’m thinking of 3 shows that can earn its place to my top 10 of the year. Well, we still one season away from the year so nothing set in stone yet, but by quick look to the next season, it seems to rely a bit too much on original shows, which can go either way. This week is a week where the shows reach conclusion arc, so we can finally see if all the building-up paid off in the end. Sirius the Jeager is still unavailable at this writing. Anyway, read on to see my thoughts on the anime this week.
This week, with Hanebado is on leave (apparently due to the earthquake) and Hi Score Girl new episode is nowhere to be seen (I don’t blame the fansub though, this one has flied under the radar this season), we have a relatively shorter compare to other weeks. Yeah, turn out I still ended up watching Tsukumogami Kashimasu, and since I already watched FLCL Alternative first episode back in April Fool, I won’t review it here. Will pick it up in the second episode onward. It’s hard to tell whether this week is good or bad, given many shows still deliver and other shows are just functional. If I have to pick a word to describe the last week, it’s “predictable”. My favorite shows continue to soar. Since I’m running out of meaningful grouping for this week, I’ll sort the shows by linking them to the same themes. Let’s go for it
It’s interesting how I just flipped through my first impression reviews I wrote a year ago at the other website, I am struck on how opinions on one show can change the more we watch it, even within consecutive episodes. Not because it changes the formula itself (although some do, like *coughHanebado*), but more because its own formula starts to wear out after the initial catch. This middle period before the climax is when shows suffer the most. It has to build the main conflict up without loosing our interest – not an easy feat to do. As it stands, I’m on the fence whether I will keep Tsukumogami or pick up Angolmois again (or dropping them both), as this week’s Tsukumogami didn’t offer much. No Steins:Gate this week (weirdly I don’t miss it much), so let’s see how this week in anime fares. This week we’ll go with reverse-alphabetical order.
Another side note, as you can tell by the above screenshot, I just watched (and enjoyed a fair bit) the OVA Aggressive Retsuko, so expect a review some time this week. I’ll update the show into 2018 Spring Anime Season (since it debut there). It’s my intention to update my First Impressions and Final Impressions as a massive list so that they can be a reliable point of reference.Continue reading “Weekly Anime Summary – Summer 2018 Week 9”
We are at Week 8 now which for me feel incredibly fast. Another month and we’ll have to say goodbye to this season. As far as this season goes it’s a underwhelming season for sure, with only comedy shows remain a high mark. Well, I’m not that fond with Grand Blue but I suppose I’m on the minority side as the manga is insanely popular, and Asobi Asobase becomes more and more of my favorite show the season. Revue Starlight comes back a big way with the revealing that could potentially change the game, and Banana Fish is still as rush as ever. Scroll down and see what the shows this week have to offer
Welcome to the “Fake” Reality
As of this moment Hi Score Girl’s sub is still unavailable, such a bitter turn for this overlooked anime. This week in anime, likewise, suffers from lots of underwhelming developments. I dropped one more show from my watch list, and maybe more if things don’t improve next couple weeks. Many of you might wonder why would I spend that much effort to watch many average shows that likely be forgotten as soon as this season’s over. Well, I don’t have an answer for that really. It’s certainly not the case of “the more I watch, the more I know” bull. It’s more that I’m still curious about anime the medium after all these years and want to find out hidden gems, or put it better, I don’t wanna miss any good show by mere ignorance. Will it burn me out eventually? yeah, probably but I’ll do the best while I’m still at this. Let’s move on from my own babble to the what you’re all here for, anime shows this week.
(Technical note: one feedback from my friend about the site was that it’s overstuffed with info. He has a point there so from now on, I’ll add the “read more” tag. Will properly edit the previous posts as well)
Ambushed by the enemy
Can’t believe we’ve already reached halfway of this anime season. It feels like all the first episodes just aired last week. The more I do this thing the more I realize time passes in a ridiculously fast pace. This week, I decide to drop 1 more show, with other 2 are in the bubble. Many shows grow on me, many shows stay the same and a bunch of them start to fall off the cliff. I might settle down for 12 new shows (plus Steins;Gate 0 and My Hero Academia) so the bubbling shows will have to fight hard next week to claim the last spot. Read on to find out which show gets the short straw. By the way, I’m quite happy with how I group my shows this week. Let’s jump in:

As I already mentioned in my previous post, for this Summer season, this week in anime moves back a day to every Tuesday now. The reason being I don’t have any show to catch up on Tuesday, so it’s a good break to gather my thoughts on these anime I’m currently watching. This mean, I’ll run down 2 episodes of Asobi Asobase, Hanebado! and Planet With this week. As for this week 5 of Summer season, well, Asobi Asobase 04 just beat everything else in terms of pushing the limits on what this cute girls show is capable of. Many shows don’t hold up well but comedy shows seem to be consistent as ever. Let’s get right down to it.
